James Schaff- Artists In Action Gallery

Artist Biography:

I have been a photographer since my early 20s and worked in the capacity as well as a videographer for a General Motors parts plant for 32 years. I served as treasurer for the Coalition of Photographic Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was a member of Gallery 218 located in Milwaukee’s 3rd Ward district. I moved to Silverton, Oregon in 2017 nand joined AiA in 2018. I served for several years as Vice President of AiA when Jens Lerback was elected President.

I have a degree in photography and teach classes at both Salem & Silverton Art Associations. My most recent digital photographic creations are from recent as well as past photos that are usually combined in digital compositions that lean towards the surreal.

Artist Statement:

As photographers we are confronted with capturing the properties of light or its absence. In the end, we must settle for an approximation of what we saw in our mind’s eye and strive to reproduce that image to the best of our ability using the mediums available to us. At the end of this process one can only hope that the image we’ve reproduced conveys the feeling we experience when we composed the image in our camera. I’m often humbled by nature’s beauty and strive to capture that which I’ve been so fortunate to have witnessed. I hope you enjoy my images as much as I enjoyed creating them.
